Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest - 2011


The Swedish Final, Melodifestivalen 2011, was held on March 12th at the Globe Theatre in Stockholm, hosted by Marie Serneholt & Rickard Olsson. The winner was chosen by 11 international juries (50%) and televoting (50%).

Before the final there were 5 semi-finals. The Swedish Semi-Finals were also hosted by Marie Serneholt & Rickard Olsson. The first 4 semi-finals had two rounds of televoting. In the first round, the top song automatically qualified for the final, while the bottom 3 songs were eliminated. In the second round, the top song (out of the remaining 4) also qualified for the final, while the 2nd & 3rd placed songs went forward to the 5th semi-final where they had a second chance to qualify for the final. In the 5th semi-final songs competed in groups of pairs. The most popular song from each pairing was chosen by televoting, then the winners of pairs 1 & 2 competed against each other to qualify for the final as did the winners of pairs 3 & 4.

Before the semi-finals there was a 'Web Joker' round. The Swedish 'Web Joker' final was held on November 8th at the 'Golden Hits' restaurant in Stockholm, hosted by Henric von Zweigbergk, featuring the top 5 songs from the internet voting. The top 2 songs (chosen by televoting) qualified for the semi-finals.

The winner of Melodifestivalen 2011 was Eric Saade with the song Popular, written by Fredrik Kempe and David Alano.

At the ESC Sweden came 1st in the second semi-final and 3rd in the final with 185 points. This was the best result for Sweden since 1999, when Charlotte Nilsson won the contest.

Eric Saade (born October 29 1990 in Kattarp, Helsingborg, Sweden) is a Swedish singer. After two years with the boyband What's Up!, he left the group in February 2009 to pursue a solo career.

In February 2010, Eric performed in the second semi-final of Melodifestivalen 2010 with the song Manboy written by Fredrik Kempe and Peter Boström. He won that semi-final and came in third place in the final of Melodifestivalen. The single reached #1 in Sweden and in the Swedish ringtone Charts. In June 2010, the single has reached Platinum status there.

On February 19 2011, Eric participated for the second time at Melodifestivalen. He won with the song Popular which was written by Fredrik Kempe and David Alano and produced by Peter Boström. Eric competed in the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011. He won the semi-final and came 3rd in the final. Popular was released on February 28 2011 in Sweden. The song reached #1 in Sweden and in the Swedish ringtone Charts. By July 2011, it sold over 40.000 copies in Sweden and received Double Platinum status there. The music video premiered on 14 April 2011. After competing in Eurovision Song Contest, Eric released the song in Europe, Australia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and the USA.

Eric is vey popular in Sweden, was nominated for many awards, released many singles and three albums. He also toured Sweden three times.
